Kundalini awakening signs and symptoms (and why you still shouldn’t compare yourself)
Before we even get into “signs and symptoms”, I want to say something clearly because the internet is doing what it always does — turning something deeply personal into a checklist.
Kundalini awakening doesn’t come with one universal set of symptoms. It can be spontaneous, it can happen gradually, it can happen in meditation, in prayer, in a session, in grief, in joy, in a random Tuesday when you’re hovering your house and your nervous system is finally relaxed enough to let the energy move.
So yes, people google this (and that’s why this blog exists), but I don’t want you reading this like: “tick tick tick, so that must be me.”
Read it more like: “ah… ok, that could explain some things.”
And if you haven’t read my first blog yet, start there because it sets the foundation: “What is Kundalini awakening?”
First, what do we mean by “symptoms”?
I’m going to use the words signs and symptoms because that’s what people search, but I want to keep it real, human, just like we think about it:
Signs = things you might notice happening (in body, emotions, perceptions, life)
Symptoms = what it feels like from the inside
And both can overlap with lots of normal human stuff — stress, trauma release, anxiety, hormones, burnout, healing, nervous system shifts — so the goal is not to label yourself, the goal is to understand your experience better.
There’s also research that groups kundalini-related experiences into categories like motor (movement/breath), sensory (tingles/heat/light/sound), interpretive (emotional/cognitive shifts), and non-physiological/anomalous phenomena.
So we’ll use a similar structure because it’s practical and easy to understand.
Common physical signs (somatic + nervous system level)
Energy sensations in the body
People often describe things like:
tingling, vibrating, buzzing, itching, “electric” feelings, burning
pressure or movement sensations along the spine
waves moving through the body, especially during rest, meditation, or after a session
Temperature changes
sudden heat, flushing, sweating
cold patches, chills, feeling hot then cold (sometimes in specific areas)
Spontaneous movements and breath changes
This is a big one, and it’s why people freak out sometimes.
trembling, shaking, twitching
spontaneous posture changes (some people call them kriyas)
unusual breathing patterns (fast/slow, shallow/deep, breath holding)
Important note: spontaneous movement can also be the nervous system discharging stress. It doesn’t automatically mean “kundalini rising to the crown and you are now enlightened.” It means your body is processing something.
Sleep + energy changes
needing more sleep than usual (integration)
or the opposite: insomnia / waking at night (met the 4am rise?)
energy swings: wired then exhausted, or bursts of creativity then collapse
Emotional signs (this is where it gets real)
Emotional release that feels bigger than the moment
crying without a clear story
grief coming up from nowhere
anger rising (often connected to boundaries)
random waves of joy, luv, devotion, tenderness
Sometimes it feels like your system is opening an old drawer and going, “ok we’re ready to feel this now.” And you’re like… “are we??”
Sensitivity + empathy
People often feel more impacted by:
other people’s energy
violence in media ( truly hard one for me)
loud places, crowds
certain relationships that suddenly feel heavy
partner’s hangover, because it feels like your own
This can be beautiful, but it can also be overstimulating, so grounding becomes non-negotiable.
Mental and cognitive signs (mind shifts)
Identity and belief shifts
This one is common and not always comfortable:
questioning your old identity
changing values
losing interest in what used to motivate you
feeling like you can’t “go back” to who you were
Clarity… or mental noise
It can go both ways:
some people feel a quiet clarity and presence
some people feel racing thoughts, spiralling, obsessive meaning-making (this is where you want to slow down, not intensify practices)
Energetic and spiritual signs (without making it weird)
Inner lights, sounds, visions (sometimes)
Some traditions describe experiences like inner light, sounds, visions, or deep bliss states.
But I want to say this carefully: these are not required, and chasing them usually creates more confusion than awakening. What comes, comes and that goes way beyond my list here. If that is not you, do not chase it.
Strong pull to meditation, prayer, silence, nature
Some people suddenly crave:
stillness
devotional practices
being alone more
walking, nature, simple routines
Not because they became “spiritual”. But because their system is trying to regulate.
The subtle signs (the ones social media doesn’t talk about)
Sometimes Kundalini awakening looks like… nothing dramatic.
It can look like:
you stop reacting the way you used to
your body starts saying “no” more clearly
you feel less interested in drama
you start choosing truth over performance
you feel more present in normal life
And honestly, that’s often the most powerful part.
When it’s not “spiritual growth” anymore — it’s a sign you need support
Please listen to this. I’m not here to scare you, but I am here to be responsible.
There are documented cases where kundalini-type experiences overlap with psychological symptoms, and people can become destabilised, especially if they’re doing intense practices alone, unguided, and pushing too hard.
Red flags to take seriously
Please seek professional support (and pause intense spiritual practices) if you have:
no sleep for many nights + you feel euphoric/untouchable
paranoia, losing touch with reality, hearing/seeing things that scare you
panic attacks that are increasing
feeling unsafe in your body
suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges
This doesn’t mean “your awakening is bad.” It means your system needs containment and care.
How to ground and support yourself (simple, not dramatic)
If you suspect you’re in some kind of awakening process, try this:
Do less, not more
reduce stimulants (caffeine, intense breathwork, extreme fasting)
pause forcing practices
choose gentle movement, walking, stretching
Basic body stuff (it matters more than you think)
eat regular meals
sleep routine as much as possible
hydration
time in nature
warm showers, heavier blankets, slower evenings
Get support from someone grounded
Not someone who tells you you’re “chosen,” and not someone who tells you you’re “crazy.” Someone who can hold both reality and spirit.
Quick FAQs (for Google + for your brain)
How long do Kundalini awakening symptoms last?
It depends. For some people it’s a sudden opening with a few intense weeks, for others it’s a slow unfolding over years. The more you integrate, the more it becomes livable.
Can Kundalini awakening feel like anxiety?
Yes. Overactivation can feel like anxiety, and anxiety can be anxiety (yes, that simple). The difference is: with awakening there’s often a sense of deep internal shift + sensitivity + energy movement. But if you’re struggling, treat it as real and get support.
Is Kundalini awakening dangerous?
It can be destabilising when forced or unsupported, which is why grounding and guidance matters.
If you’re reading this and thinking “this is me”
You don’t need to diagnose yourself. You don’t need to compare. You don’t need to rush.
Start with understanding what Kundalini awakening is and how it works, and then come back to this list with softer eyes.
Because the goal is not to collect symptoms.
The goal is to become more you.
If your experience isn’t dramatic but your perception is changing (less reaction, more space), read: What is Non-Duality in next journal.
